Miners are loading ore onto cars in the granite porphyry deposits found in the open cut on the first level of Metcalf mines during the late 19th century. During the next 50 years, various companies, like the Arizona Copper Company, Detroit Copper Company, and ultimately Phelps Dodge, financed the growth of what became known as the Clifton-Morenci area. Later, an open-pit mine was developed on the site that once was Metcalf. Today, it is the largest open-pit porphyry copper mine in North America. (Courtesy of USGS.)
